Flaviana won the first edition of the Miss Universe Tanzania pageant in 2007, and went on to represent her country in the Miss Universe pageant the same year, where she placed among the Top 15 semifinalists and ended up in 6th place after the evening gown competition. She was the first contestant from Tanzania to compete at Miss Universe 2007, and compete with a shaved head.

It's Dar: What is your nick name?
Flaviana: My nickname is Lavvy
It's Dar: Name 3 places you like in Dar
Flaviana: Runway Lounge, my Grandfather’s place and Sea cliff hotel?
It's Dar: Why are you so HOT??
Flaviana: Because I am my natural self, I think that nothing makes you hotter than accepting who you are and celebrating yourself!
It's Dar: Do you see yourself as a person that you would look-up to when you were a kid?
Flaviana: Definitely, I have proven to myself and everyone that hard work and focus pays off, this is the best role model for any young child.
It's Dar: How do you "give back" to Dar?
Flaviana: I give back in various way including charity donations like for Mitindo House. I am also about to launch my foundation – Flaviana Matata Foundation which will deal with a number of charity activities.
It's Dar: What is the best piece of advice you can offer to aspiring models
Flaviana: Focus, focus, focus! Most young girls think that modeling is all about fun and parties, but in fact it is a very demanding job. Without focus, you will never make it!
It's Dar: If you were to invite a model for dinner who would it be?
Flaviana: Iman would be my guest, because she was the first African model who made it big in the industry and she continues to support various causes that are related to African models.
It's Dar: If this whole modeling thing doesn't work, what’s your fallback?
Flaviana: I cannot say that modeling career didn’t work out because I am already on track, however I believe that I am like a cat and I always land on my feet, no matter what.
It's Dar: Fashion or the business of fashion, which so you find more engaging, inspiring and closer to your heart?
Flaviana: Fashion is definitely more engaging but the two are not far apart, it is not a coincidence that many models later go into the business of fashion as we have valuable insight to the entire industry. So from this aspect business of fashion is closer to the heart.
It's Dar: Why do you believe fashion is important.
Flaviana: Fashion is important because it is the creative expression of a society but also it is a modern and effective way to showcase the culture and art of a given society.
